The typographer in the elevator

I woke up this morning at the bottom of the CN Tower.

Binge-induced gutter, you ask? On the contrary, by divine grace and my employers' infinite wisdom I am spending the next two days as a grateful delegate of Design Thinkers 2009.

The marketing theme is b-movies -- "They walk among us" printed on the cover of the program book (a tasty morsel of layout and production) -- and you can certainly spot the designers in the district. They shall know us by our jaunty hats, ecopreneurial spirits and meticulously effortless business-shabby style (our matching schwag bags make us pretty easy to spot, too).

We're everywhere you look. Here an up-and-comer, there a superstar agency partner. Here a Yale professor, there a fellow Red River alum. I had no sooner left my room this morning than I spotted another of the pack. (Even if he hadn't been profiled in the program as tomorrow's speaker on type, I'd have known we were headed to the same party -- we just have each other pegged on sight.)

Day one was wonderful and jam packed with inspiration. Time to tuck up under the tower (in a far-from-the-gutter, rather lovely hotel room) and get ready to do it all again tomorrow.
